BBC Studios – Music Strategy Manager (UK)

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Commercial, Rights and Business (CRBA) team as Head of Music Strategy for Music. The purpose of this role is to ensure that the BBC acquires, creates and distributes intellectual property in order to maximize audience value and commercial return in a digital and global media environment.

Role Responsibility
  • The first point of contact for all musical uses of new productions in BBC studios and independently produced programs.
  • Responsible for training production teams on the new BBC and BBC studios terms and conditions and for implementing the music rights strategy.
  • Work closely with the BBC Group Music Licensing Officer, Talent Rights Negotiation Officer, BBC Music Copyright, BBC Studios Production Director of Commercial Affairs and Global Rights Director, to ensure that broader strategic priorities of music licensing are respected.
  • Weekly routine with Head of Music Licensing and Head of Talent Rights.
  • Manage key relationships within the music industry to ensure that BBC Studios licenses music in an efficient and cost effective manner.
  • Act as the BBC Studios Music Supervisor (or, where applicable, liaise with the Production Music Supervisor) in conjunction with the BBC CRBA Commercial Affairs Music Copyright Team, as appropriate applicable, for the commissions of the BBC studios, including, but not limited to, contract composers, as applicable.
  • Advise on music budgets for BBC Studios productions, taking into account factors such as investment conditions.
  • Manage clear and consistent communication across all BBC Studios production areas.
  • Develop and implement a mandatory online music usage course for all music users in BBC Studios content and in BBC PS content when invested by BBC Studios.
  • Establish a database of key contacts in the recording and publishing industry.
  • Establish pricing schedules, where possible, with major music publishers for North American buybacks (for all media) and worldwide buybacks of all rights.
  • Advice and training of BBC Studios production teams for third party orders (Non BBC).
  • Liaison with all the other musical teams of the broadcasters concerned (excluding BBC commissions).
  • Work with BBC Music Publishing on the required rights for commissioned music in relation to all productions of BBC Studios, BBC Children’s Production and all relevant independent productions.
The ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of business affairs as well as knowledge of the creative industry. Extensive experience in music licensing in all areas, including synchronization and delivery of music in audiovisual content, as well as in-depth and detailed knowledge of musical framework agreements is essential.

You will have a clear understanding of the creative importance of music in audiovisual content, a progressive approach to problem solving, and a positive, empowering attitude. You will be adept at dealing with conductors and have an understanding of developing trends in the global music industry.

Effective stakeholder management and advisory skills are essential for this role. We are looking for a strong communicator, team player, and someone who has a good understanding of the regulatory and policy considerations that underpin the BBC’s unique role in the broadcasting landscape.

You will need to have an understanding of the business operation of BBC Studios and the value to the BBC Group and the payer of the license fees. To be successful in this role, you will need established relationships within the music industry, particularly within the timing and licensing teams in the UK and overseas; especially in North America.
