Elvis Costello Slams Platinum Jubilee Concert E! News UK

Elvis Costello called the Platinum Party gig at the Palace “s****” and singled out Sir Rod Stewart’s performance for particular reviews.

The ‘Oliver’s Army’ hitmaker was unimpressed with last weekend’s star-studded musical extravaganza – which included performances from Queen, Diana Ross, George Ezra and Elbow – and poked fun at the ” Maggie May’ for her large-scale rendition of ‘My Dear Caroline’.

Speaking on stage in Glasgow, Elvis, 67, told the audience: ‘I was in Brighton the other night when the Jubilee was happening. But the show was good, right? Was not it? No, it was crap.

“I mean, I know you all love him and he’s one of yours and everything except Rod. What is that ?

“I gotta say, look, we all have bad nights vocally, but for the love of shit, ‘Sweet f***ing Caroline’.

“Are you kidding me ?

“I mean I’ve been in show business for 45 years, so I know a thing or two. How come no one suggested Rod sing “You Wear It Well”?”

Elvis then joked that Diana, who sang “Chain Reaction”, could have chosen other tracks from her catalog that would have been more appropriate.

He joked: “Look, Diana Ross had a whole playlist of songs that might have suited the occasion: ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’, ‘I’m Living In Shame’. I don’t say ‘Love Child’.

“You never heard of me.”

Rod’s wife Penny Lancaster has previously defended her husband and insisted it was not his choice to sing the Neil Diamond classic.

She said: “The BBC told Rod we needed you to sing ‘Sweet Caroline’, it’s the Queen’s favourite, you have to do it so he didn’t really have a choice.”

And it was “touch and go” to find out if the 77-year-old star would perform even after COVID-19 affected her voice.

Penny said: “It was very, very tricky and he was so nervous before that and he was in Vegas for three weeks and got covid right after the last show he came home and was past ten days of being contagious but he lost his voice.

“So on Wednesday’s sound check he went and wore a mask but had no voice and he was like how long can I leave him?”

“So he went for another rehearsal on Friday but his voice is there now but he wasn’t quite up to speed but he didn’t want to disappoint anyone. It wasn’t the Rod Stewart show, it was for the nation and for everyone to come together for the queen and he wanted to make people happy, so that was the song.”
