Spotify has over 70 million songs in its

catalog, but there are several million songs that are not on the platform.

If you have songs on your computer that are not streamed to Spotify, you can download them to Spotify and listen to them there. And if you sync your computer with the Spotify mobile app, you can also take those songs on the go.

And of course, if you are a musician or recording artist, you can also upload your songs to Spotify’s catalog so that anyone can listen to them. It just takes a little more work.

Here’s how to download music from your computer to Spotify and then sync it with the mobile app.

How to Download Local Music to Spotify on Computer

You’ll need to do this using the Spotify desktop app, which is available for free on Mac and PC.

1. Open Spotify on your computer and click your account name in the upper right corner, then click Settings.

2. Scroll to Local files cap and activate Show local files.

3. A new menu called Show songs from will appear. If your local songs are in one of the default folders offered by Spotify, turn it on – if not, click Add source and choose the folder on your computer where the songs are located. This will upload all the audio files in that folder to Spotify.

You can play these songs immediately or move them to other playlists like normal Spotify songs. You just can’t add them to your favorite song list.

So now you have the songs on your computer uploaded to the Spotify app on your computer. Let’s put these songs on your phone as well.

How to Download Local Music to Spotify on Phone

The steps for listening to your downloaded music in the Spotify mobile app are quite similar for iPhone and Android users.

Before you do anything, make sure that you are a Spotify Premium member. Only Premium members can stream local music in the mobile app.

You’ll also want to add all of your local music to a playlist, other than the default local files playlist. You cannot open this default playlist in the mobile app, so it will make your songs visible.

And finally, if you are using an iPhone, you need to enable local files on your phone first. Open Spotify and tap Home in the lower left corner, then gear icon at the top right to open the app settings. Then press Local files and switch to the Local audio files option.

Once you’ve configured everything:

1. Connect your iPhone or Android to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer where you downloaded the songs. If your computer uses Ethernet, temporarily connect it to Wi-Fi.

2. Open the Spotify app and head to the playlist where you put your local songs.

3. Under the playlist name, tap the download icon. It looks like an arrow pointing down.

Once you tap download, Spotify saves every song in the playlist to your phone, including the ones you downloaded. Feel free to move them to other playlists like normal songs.

The songs will stay on your phone until you tap the download icon again to delete them.

How to Download Music to Spotify for Others to Stream

The steps we have outlined help you download music, but only you can listen to it. If you want to add music to Spotify’s catalog so that anyone can stream it (and you can make money from it), there is a different process.

To put your music on Spotify, you need to work with a distribution company. Every business has a slightly different process, but that usually involves paying a fee and then giving them the masters of your music.

Once you have your songs on Spotify, most distributors will take some of the money you earn for themselves.

There are dozens of different distribution companies that help artists access Spotify. Most independent artists recommend sites like Distrokid and Tunecore, and Spotify maintains its own list of “favorite” companies.

If you want to download original music to Spotify, start looking for a distributor.
