“It mirrored the way Chris wrote Ruth”

Showrunner Chris Mundy and music supervisor Gabe Hilfer recently opened up to ok player on Ruth’s love of hip hop, Gabe explaining:

“His specific taste for hip-hop, I think, was born out of that authenticity, which was his whole honesty and character. She never takes shit, to me that was a real hallmark of 90s hip-hop, you know what I mean? It was almost just an attitude about the art form…it wasn’t big-money hip-hop back then. It was just authentic. It mirrored the way Chris wrote Ruth.

Chris Mundy added, “And a lot of that music is also ambitious,” Mundy added. “And I think it fit really well with her too, besides just being tough.”

They also confirm that it was Gabe who suggested Nas Illmatic as a recurring presence throughout the episode.

“I remember you called me. I remember that – you called me a week later and said, ‘Yeah, that’s the one, that’s the album. I listened Illmatic again and you are right. That’s the one we should be doing,” Gabe noted. “And so Illmatic became part of it.
